Cristopher Sanchez struck out 11 batters in six shutout innings as the visiting Philadelphia Phillies beat the Baltimore Orioles 5-0 on Saturday night to even the three-game series at one game apiece.
Bryce Harper, Brandon Marsh and Trea Turner each had two of Philadelphia’s 10 hits and Justin Crawford provided a two-run single as the Phillies won for only the second time in a 10-game stretch.
Sanchez (14-4), who threw 99 pitches, worked around five walks and has the highest win total in the major leagues this year. Relievers Jonathan Bowlan, Jose Alvarado and Jhoan Duran each pitched an inning in what became a combined three-hitter. Philadelphia pitchers notched a total of 14 strikeouts.
It marked the first shutout for the Phillies’ pitching staff since July 12 — the last day before the All-Star break.
Orioles starter Shane Baz (4-10) turned in a solid outing as well, lasting 6 1/3 innings and giving up one run on six hits and one walk. He became the sixth 10-game loser in the big leagues this season.
Baltimore, which had a two-game winning streak snapped, didn’t have an extra-base hit. Gunnar Henderson and Tyler O’Neill each had a single and reached on a walk, while Dylan Beavers added a pinch-hit single and a stolen base in the seventh inning when the score was 1-0.
The Orioles stranded eight runners on base.
The Phillies posted the game’s first run in the fifth inning on Bryan De La Cruz’s two-out single which scored Bryson Stott, who reached on a one-out walk.
Philadelphia tacked on four eighth-inning runs on singles from Alec Bohm, Marsh and Crawford after Kyle Schwarber and Harper worked one-out walks.
Baltimore relievers Grant Wolfram and Andrew Kittredge were each charged with two runs in the inning.
Catcher Jake Rogers, acquired from the Detroit Tigers in a trade on Thursday, went 0-for-3 with two strikeouts in his first start for the Orioles. The Phillies went 3-for-3 on stolen bases with Rogers behind the plate, though he picked a runner off first base.
