MLB roundup: Brewers pound Pirates, win 10th straight

Brice Turang and Christian Yelich homered and Jose Quintana allowed one run over six innings to lead Milwaukee to its 10th consecutive victory, a 7-1 decision over the visiting Pittsburgh Pirates on Monday.
The National League Central-leading Brewers improved to 74-44, best in the majors, and moved 6 1/2 games ahead of the Chicago Cubs, who were idle Monday.
Quintana (10-4) gave up three hits while striking out three and walking one. Turang jump-started the Brewers with a leadoff homer in the first and Yelich ignited a four-run third inning with a solo shot.
Pirates starter Andrew Heaney (5-10) allowed six runs, five earned, on nine hits in four innings.
Astros 7, Red Sox 6
Chas McCormick and Ramon Urias slugged two-run home runs in support of Cristian Javier, who enjoyed a triumphant return from Tommy John surgery in Houston’s win over visiting Boston.
Javier (1-0), making his first appearance since May 21, 2024, allowed a single to start the game and then a two-run homer by Alex Bregman before settling in. He wound up tossing five innings of two-run ball. Bennett Sousa got the last out for his fourth save.
Red Sox ace Garrett Crochet (13-5) allowed a season-high-tying five runs while logging four innings, his fewest this year.
Tigers 2, White Sox 1
Spencer Torkelson smacked a go-ahead solo home run in the ninth inning and Chris Paddack and three relievers combined on a four-hitter to boost visiting Detroit past Chicago.
Torkelson went 2-for-4 as the Tigers won for the third time in four games. Six White Sox pitchers combined for 13 strikeouts, but Chicago has lost seven of eight.
Kyle Finnegan (2-4) picked up the victory over Brandon Eisert (2-4). Will Vest was perfect in the bottom of the ninth to earn his 17th save.
Phillies 4, Reds 1
Kyle Schwarber belted his 42nd home run of the season to highlight a four-run, two-out rally in the eighth as visiting Philadelphia beat Cincinnati for its fourth straight win.
The decisive rally also included RBI hits from Weston Wilson and Trea Turner. Jordan Romano (2-4) pitched a spotless seventh to secure the win, and Orion Kerkering fired a perfect ninth for his third save.
Reds starter Andrew Abbott (8-3) wound up yielding three runs on six hits in 7 2/3 innings. Gavin Lux finished 3-for-4 with an RBI single.
Padres 4, Giants 1
Jake Cronenworth broke a seventh-inning tie with an RBI single, Freddy Fermin followed with a two-run homer and San Diego rewarded Yu Darvish’s sharp effort with a road victory over San Francisco.
Jackson Merrill chipped in with an RBI double and two singles for the Padres, who pulled within one game of the first-place Los Angeles Dodgers in the National League West. Darvish (2-3) limited the Giants to four hits and one run in six innings.
San Francisco ace Logan Webb (10-9) was charged with four runs on eight hits in 6 1/3 innings. Dominic Smith had one of the Giants’ five hits, extending his hitting streak to a career-high 14 games.
Angels 7, Dodgers 4
Zach Neto went 3-for-3 with two homers, three runs, two walks and two RBIs while leading the Los Angeles Angels to a victory over the Los Angeles Dodgers in Anaheim, Calif.
Yoan Moncada had two hits and two RBIs and Bryce Teodosio doubled and singled for the Angels, who improved to 4-0 against the Dodgers this year, clinching the season Freeway Series for the first time since 2019. Angels starter Jose Soriano (8-9) allowed two hits over six shutout innings.
Shohei Ohtani hit his 42nd home run, Max Muncy added a three-run blast and Mookie Betts and Will Smith each had two hits for the Dodgers. Yoshinobu Yamamoto (10-8) gave up a career-high six runs on six hits over 4 2/3 innings.
Yankees 6, Twins 2
Will Warren surrendered just three hits and two runs over 6 2/3 innings for New York, which socked four solo homers in a win over visiting Minnesota.
Warren (7-5) struck out seven and guiding the Yankees to just their third win in 10 games. Cody Bellinger, Giancarlo Stanton, Ben Rice and Jazz Chisholm Jr. homered for New York.
Twins starter Zebby Matthews (3-4) allowed three runs in 5 2/3 innings while tying his career high with nine strikeouts. The Twins, winners of four of five games, managed only three hits, including home runs from Byron Buxton and Trevor Larnach.
Rangers 7, Diamondbacks 6 (10 innings)
Jake Burger’s pinch-hit single off the left field wall in the 10th inning produced the walk-off run as Texas roared from behind to beat Arizona in Arlington, Texas.
The Rangers were down 5-0 and 6-1 before working their way back into the game. They tied it on Rowdy Tellez’s solo home run off Andrew Hoffmann to open the ninth, and they beat Andrew Saalfrank (0-1) in the 10th. Phil Maton (2-3) pitched a perfect top of the 10th.
Wyatt Langford also homered for Texas, which ended a four-game skid. The Diamondbacks, whose three-game winning streak ended, got homers from Tyler Locklear, Corbin Carroll, Geraldo Perdomo and Blaze Alexander.
Cardinals 3, Rockies 2
Pinch hitter Brendan Donovan hit a two-run double in the eighth inning to lift St. Louis past visiting Colorado.
Thomas Saggese went 3-for-4 with a run and Alec Burleson finished 2-for-4 with an RBI for the Cardinals. St. Louis starter Miles Mikolas allowed two runs on four hits in 6 2/3 innings. Kyle Leahy (3-1) pitched 2 1/3 scoreless innings.
Rockies starter Chase Dollander yielded one run on five hits in five innings before Juan Mejia (1-1) took the loss. Warming Bernabel and Brenton Doyle recorded RBIs in the seventh for Colorado.
Royals 7, Nationals 4
Kyle Isbel and Salvador Perez hit two-run homers in the sixth inning as host Kansas City rallied to beat Washington.
Royals reliever Daniel Lynch IV (4-2) earned the victory after allowing two runs and five hits over two innings. Carlos Estevez secured his 30th save of the season.
Josh Bell and Paul DeJong hit two-run shots for the Nationals. Jackson Rutledge (1-2) gave up the go-ahead runs on Isbel’s long ball.
Rays 7, Athletics 4
Christopher Morel, Brandon Lowe and Junior Caminero each hit a solo homer to help Tampa Bay beat the Athletics in West Sacramento, Calif.
Chandler Simpson and Caminero had three hits and a walk apiece as the Rays won for just the sixth time in 21 games. Ryan Pepiot (8-9) allowed four runs in 6 1/3 innings. Pete Fairbanks tossed a scoreless ninth for his 20th save.
Shea Langeliers went 3-for-4 with a homer and Tyler Soderstrom slugged a three-run shot for the Athletics, who lost for just the sixth time in 17 games. A’s starter Jeffrey Springs (10-8) gave up four runs and seven hits over 3 1/3 innings.
