First Lady Michelle Obama will be visiting Quonset Point Business Park on Monday.
Mrs. Obama will be the honored guest of General Dynamics Electric Boat in a keel-laying ceremony. A Navy tradition in which her initials will adorn a brand new submarine, forever inscribed on the future USS Illinois, her home state.
Mrs. Obama, who has made it a priority to support military families, is expected to speak at the ceremony.
The submarine Illinois will be the 13th completed in the Virginia Class of subs and will be commissioned in 2015. It is expected to cost approximately $2.7 billion.
Under the current contract, shared by Electric Boat and Newport News Shipbuilding based out of Virginia, the plan is to complete 15 more submarines for Naval commission. Officials at Electric Boat have said that they expect to hire over 400 more workers in order to complete the contract work.
